For the first time, a conductor, instrumentalist, composer Valter Soosalu is in front of the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, inviting audiences to explore the distinctive sound worlds of different composers, celebrating the emergence of new light from silence and darkness.
At the heart of the concert is Tõnu Kõrvits’s poetic hymn of gratitude to nature and all creation, The Canticle of the Sun, based on the 13th-century poem of the same name by Saint Francis of Assisi. James MacMillan’s motets from The Strathclyde Motets bring together the tradition of Scottish sacred music with a contemporary musical language. Lux aeterna, one of the best-known choral works by György Ligeti, a major figure in 20th-century contemporary music, creates a timeless soundscape that opens a space for eternal light. The evening will be made all the more special by the world premiere of a new work by Erkki-Sven Tüür.
Valter Soosalu: “To listen to music with concentration, we need silence – an environment free from distracting sounds. An excess of noise tires us, makes us deaf, and music remains unborn. To see clearly, we need light. But too much light blinds us, which is why we need the right amount of light at the right time.
Fortunately, nature gives us a season when everything superfluous sinks into darkness. If we know how to look, what we truly value gradually begins to emerge from it. This is not simply a time of darkness, but a time to free ourselves from noise. Darkness is only apparent; it helps us to see again. It is a time when new light is born. And that is what we are celebrating with this concert.”
