The high period in English oratorio music started with Handel in 1739 when he
wrote Israel in Egypt. English
oratorio was a genre that Handel founded to represent it alone in his time. He
modeled his work after Italian oratorio but his style was even more operatic
and dramatic. Israel in Egypt is a kind
of choral epic with choir in the central role.
