Music lovers know Tõnu Kaljuste as a close co-worker to Veljo Tormis and Arvo Pärt, and one of the best interpreters. At the same time, Kaljuste also has special like-mindedness with several other renowned composers from other cultures. The main piece of this current set, “Requiem” by Alfred Schnittke, who was one of the most unique composers and avant-gardists of Soviet period and also the developer of so-called polystylistic technique, could not be recorded in Schnittke's hometown – Soviet Moscow – so the first recording of “Requiem” took place in Estonia Concert Hall in 1976 and was conducted by Tõnu Kaljuste.
In this remarkable visit to Tallinn, Alfred Schnittke and Arvo Pärt found kindred spirits in each other. Connections from Schnittke's “Requiem” later found their way to Pärt's piece “Miserere”, which is the other remarkable composition in the given set.
Tõnu Kaljuste and the victories of Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, in both Estonian and world concert stages, are certainly closely connected. Kaljuste was the founder of the choir (in 1981) and also the principal conductor (until 2001). Kaljuste has been touring with Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir and also Tallinn Chamber Orchestra (which was also founded by Kaljuste to be a partner to the choir) all over the continents and they have recorded pieces that have received highest prizes, among others, a Grammy award in 2014.
