Litany, or "Prayers of St John Chrysostom for each
Hour of the Day and Night" consists, like so much of Pärt's
work, entirely of essentials. The high string writing that opens
the piece prompts ethereal solo voices and the quiet, Sibelian
rumble of a big drum tremolando. Within minutes the mood
intensifies and the instruments - rather more of them than we're
used to from this composer (including select brass and woodwind)
- congregate to heighten the drama. At 11'06'', the mood changes
with a pulsing drum and a gently insistent rhythm. Again, volume
and mood intensify, but this time the principal climax - which
mushrooms suddenly to almost Wagnerian proportions - summons
gongs, bells, bass-drum and timpani for what sounds like a solemn
ritual chiming.

Über Pärt und seine Musik kann man nicht viele Worte verlieren.
Entweder man mag diese Schlichtheit, die Unschuld der
Ereignislosigkeit, die Magie des Floskelhaften. Oder man hasst
die Banalität, die sich anbiedernde Frömmelei, das den Alten
Abgekupferte seiner Hervorbringungen.
All dies scheint indes nebensächlich beim Hören. Denn kaum
jemand würde sich nicht zunächst behaglich zurücklehnen
angesichts der tiefen, letztlich uneitlen Schönheit von Werken
wie "Litany", "Psalom" oder
"Trisagion" - ja eigentlich aller seiner Werke.
Ästhetische Bedenken, der Verdacht der Bauernfängerei, all das
bleibt draussen, wenn man diese Klänge erst einmal in sich
hineingelassen hat. Allerdings sind sie nach dem jeweils letzten
meist auch ziemlich schnell wieder draussen, und dann bleibt das
dezent unerfreuliche Gefühl, schon wieder hereingefallen zu sein
auf dieses kunstfoll-archaische Geflecht aus unbedeutenden
Einzelteilen, die sich doch immer wieder zu unerklärlicher
Grösse aufschwingen.
