Harmonia Mundi Hybrid SACD 807504<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\"><o:p><\/o:p><span>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span><o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">One<br \/>\nof Sergei Rachmaninoff&#8217;s insufficiently appreciated masterworks, 1915&#8217;s soulful<br \/>\nVsenochnoe Bdenie (Opus 37) may be the least &#8220;operatic&#8221; music I&#8217;ve<br \/>\never reviewed for this magazine. It certainly surpasses his operas in quality<br \/>\nand will astonish those who consider the composer only a master of virtuosic<br \/>\npiano writing or flashy orchestral coloration. Here, drawing from liturgical as<br \/>\nwell as folk traditions, he lavished great lyric inspiration and polyphonic<br \/>\nskill on a cycle of fifteen movements \u2014 six Vesper settings and nine Vigils.<br \/>\nRachmaninoff (a nonbeliever) was forty-two when this gorgeous piece had its<br \/>\npremiere; though 1910&#8217;s lovely Liturgy of St. John Chrysosthom presaged it in<br \/>\nsome respects, some musicologists have seen its interiority and focus on<br \/>\nlooking back into several Russian Orthodox choral traditions as a response to<br \/>\nthe encroaching horrors of World War I.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\"><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">From<br \/>\nthe evidence of the last names, none of the thirty singers in the Estonian<br \/>\nPhilharmonic Chamber Choir are ethnic Russians, but the older among them would<br \/>\nhave been schooled in the language, and they clearly know their way around this<br \/>\nrepertory very well indeed. The choir&#8217;s beautifully blended sound and ability<br \/>\nto achieve finely-honed dynamic and harmonic effects prove major assets.<br \/>\nHillier directed the Choir from 2001 through 2007: those years included<br \/>\ncollaborations with contemporary Estonian composers such as Arvo P\u00e4rt. This<br \/>\nrecording was made in May 2004 and originally released in 2005; this rerelease<br \/>\nin wonderfully balanced sound in the SACD format can also be played on any CD<br \/>\nplayer. It can honorably be set beside Valery Polyansky&#8217;s great 1986<br \/>\nperformance (Melodiya 10-00105) with slightly larger forces and a less<br \/>\ncrystalline but aptly cathedral-based acoustic. Every serious lover of Russian<br \/>\nchoral music will want to acquire one of them \u2014 or both.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\"><o:p>&nbsp;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-size: 10pt; font-family: Verdana;\">The<br \/>\nfirst voice the listener encounters belongs to Vladimir Miller, one of those<br \/>\nunearthly extreme-low basses absolutely needed in Russian church music. The<br \/>\nbriefly heard choral solo tenors \u2014 Tiit Kogerman and Mati Turi \u2014 are properly<br \/>\nmusical and inconspicuous. One may have heard more imposing voices \u2014 the<br \/>\nunforgettable Irina Arkhipova&#8217;s contribution under Polyansky, for one \u2014 than<br \/>\nIris Oja&#8217;s alto in &#8220;Praise the Lord, O my soul,&#8221; but Oja&#8217;s dignified<br \/>\ntone is handsomely and movingly projected.
