The work was first performed at ceremonies marking the millennium of that event. The Psalms have gained several performances by top choral groups, tending to support predictions that the late works of\u00a0<a class=\"name-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.allmusic.com\/artist\/schnittke-mn0001169129\">Schnittke<\/a>, often religious, may prove to be his most significant. They build dense polyphony on top of chant-like bases, creating a muscular texture with an effect distinct from that of\u00a0<a class=\"name-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.allmusic.com\/artist\/arvo-p%C3%A4rt-mn0000929776\">Arvo P\u00e4rt<\/a>&#8216;s holy minimalism, also represented on this album by the well-known Magnificat and Nunc dimittis. Performers can take it in different directions: monumental, more\u00a0<a class=\"name-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.allmusic.com\/artist\/p%C3%A4rt-mn0000929776\">P\u00e4rt<\/a>-like, or, as here, intense and sensuous. Conductor\u00a0<a class=\"name-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.allmusic.com\/artist\/kaspars-putnins-mn0002224304\">Kaspars Putnins<\/a>\u00a0obtains from the\u00a0<a class=\"name-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.allmusic.com\/artist\/estonian-philharmonic-chamber-choir-mn0001627332\">Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir<\/a>\u00a0a sound quite different from what they may be used to with\u00a0<a class=\"name-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.allmusic.com\/artist\/p%C3%A4rt-mn0000929776\">P\u00e4rt<\/a>, building up tension that is dissipated in the ethereal wordless finale. They&#8217;re backed by fine sound from the appropriate St. Nicholas&#8217; Church in Tallinn.
