His current style was more than a decade away, and his country\u2019s independence further away again. P\u00e4rt himself has described the work as \u201csimply a scale&#8230;that takes the form of a four-part cluster, in that every note is sustained into the following note\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"no_name selectionShareable\">It\u2019s also a serial work that uses the notes of the scale as its repeating series. And, most immediately for today\u2019s listeners, it\u2019s an exercise in choral texturing in which the inherent dissonances of the material are cushioned by the sheer beauty of the slow-moving choral lines.\u00a0Wednesday\u2019s performance made the choral pedigree of the Estonian choir immediately obvious. The singing of this work, which can be seen as a surprising precursor of the later P\u00e4rt, was controlled, lucid, reserved, even slightly detached.\u00a0The works by P\u00e4rt were presented in mostly chronological order.\u00a0<em>Solfeggio<\/em>\u00a0was followed by\u00a0<em>Summa<\/em>\u00a0from 1977 and the\u00a0<em>Magnificat<\/em>\u00a0from 1989, then three works from the 1990s and the\u00a0<em>Nunc dimittis<\/em>\u00a0of 2001.\u00a0The last of P\u00e4rt\u2019s works to be sung, however, was\u00a0<em>Dopo la vittoria<\/em>, a piece commissioned to mark the 1,600th anniversary of the death of Saint Ambrosius in 1996. The frequent springing rhythmic lightness of the music set its mood quite apart from the rest of this P\u00e4rt selection. The harmonic world changed after the interval, with Irish composer Conor O\u2019Reilly\u2019s\u00a0<em>Pie Jesu<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Angus Dei<\/em>\u00a0heralding styles of greater warmth and more overt emotionalism.
