Rachmaninov's Vespers

One of the best known and unique masterpieces of Russian liturgical music, Sergei Rachmaninov's 15-movement cycle of evening prayers (Vespers) was composed in 1915. The piece engages many orthodox church music traditions colored by the romantic sound and spirituality so characteristic to Rachmaninov. Basso profundo (deep bass voice), specialty of Russian church music, plays an important role in the Vespers. At the EPCC concerts a St. Petersburg bass, Vladimir Miller appears as a special guest Basso profundo artist. The Vespers will be recorded for Harmonia Mundi after the Estonia performances.
