Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 is like a summary statement of the composer’s life work, a powerful final accord of his considerable development and pioneer of a new era – Romanticism. Schiller and Beethoven’s call for fraternity, liberty and unity of mankind in the finale of the symphony has now been adopted as the anthem of the European Union.
