The Sibelius Jubilee Year should be outsourced to Estonia
There is no shortage of recordings of the mixed choir songs of Jean Sibelius, and there are even a couple of fairly new complete works –recordings. In honour of the Jubilee Year, however, the record company Ondine has released a new double cd of the mixed choir songs of Sibelius, and the selected choir is the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir. In this case, outsourcing to Estonia has paid off ¬ – quality this high is not available is Finland.
The most astounding aspect of the recording is the very high level of the choir’s vocal technique and other skills. Finnish choirs simply cannot reach a sound this professional, rich, controlled and homogenous. This is not bland your choir singing, strained amateur singing or thick opera. This is an in-tune, plastic and bearing mixed choir sound, which immediately updates the choir music of Sibelius to a professional level. The skills of the Estonian singers can be heard as even the dull hymns and mundane school songs receive a vigorous interpretation, coherent in every detail.
The outsourcing also has its negative effects. The pronunciation sounds foreign from time to time, and especially in the l-letters and Scandinavian vowels å, ä and ö, the Estonian accent creates a funny nuance. At times the choir clearly focuses on the vocal technique and not the text, which, considering the circumstances is an acceptable solution.
Another problem is the sense of playing it safe in the interpretations. The experienced choir conductor Heikki Seppänen of course knows the songs of Sibelius very well, and is able to direct the Estonians into vigorous, secure interpretations – but that’s it. For example, the eilaa-eilaa part in the opening track Rakastava is sung really beautifully, but these singers have the potential to more experimental sounds. There are not very many robust, clever or radical moments on this record, but luckily there are a few.
One important thing is that with this record, the mixed choir music of Jean Sibelius gets an interpretation on an international professional level. This is a great favour to the music, and thanks for this belong to the Estonian choral tradition and to the understanding of the record company Ondine.

Jean Sibeliuksen sekakuorolauluista ei levytyksiä puutu, ja melko tuoreita kokonaislevytyksiäkin on saatavilla pari. Juhlavuoden kunniaksi Ondine-yhtiö on kuitenkin julkaissut Sibeliuksen sekakuorotuotannosta uuden tuplalevyn, jolle kuoroksi on valittu Viron filharmoninen kamarikuoro. Tässä asiassa ulkoistaminen Viroon on kannattanut – näin kovaa laatua ei Suomesta saa.

Huikeinta levyssä on kuoron äänenmuodostuksen ja muun osaamisen erittäin korkea taso. Kotimaiset kuorot eivät kerta kaikkiaan yllä yhtä ammattimaiseen, täyteläiseen, hallittuun ja yhtenäiseen sointiin. Tämä ei ole laimeaa nuorisokuorolauleskelua, harrastekuorojen pinnistelyä tai paksua oopperasoppaa. Tämä on puhdasta, plastista ja kantavaa sekakuorosointia, joka kertaheitolla päivittää Sibeliuksen kuoromusiikin ammattitasolle. Virolaisten osaaminen kuuluu siinä, että jopa tylsät virret ja banaalit koululaulut saavat jäntevän, yksityiskohtiaan myöten yhtenäisen tulkinnan.
Toki Viroon ulkoistamisessa on haittansa. Aäntämys lipeää paikoitellen ulkomaiseksi, ja etenkin älliin ja ääkkösiin virolainen aksentti antaa hupaisaa retrosävyä. Paikoin kuoro selvästi laulaa äänenmuodostus eikä teksti edellä, mikä olosuhteet huomioon ottaen on käypä ratkaisu.
Toinen ongelma liittyy varmistelun makuun tulkinnoissa. Kokenut kuoromies Heikki Seppänen tietysti tuntee Sibelius-ohjelmiston kuin omat taskunsa, ja pystyy ohjaamaan virolaisjoukot napakoihin, varmoihin tulkintoihin – mutta siihen se jää. Esimerkiksi avausraidan Rakastava-sarjassa lallatteluväliosa sujuu todella kauniisti, mutta tällä porukalla olisi mahdollisuuksia kokeilevampiin sointeihin. Jykeviä, nokkelia tai radikaaleja hetkiä on tällä levyllä melko harvassa – mutta siellä täällä sentään.
Olennaista on, että tämän levyn myötä Jean Sibeliuksen sekakuoromusiikki saa kansainvälisen ammattitason tulkinnan. Se on suuri palvelus musiikille, ja siitä kiitos kuuluu Viron kuoroperinteelle ja Ondine-yhtiön ymmärrykselle.
